Jack Hughes has been ruled out for the New Jersey Devils’ matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks tonight. He’s out week-to-week with an upper-body injury.
The injury to Hughes comes at a terrible time for the player and his team. He was having a spectacular start to the season with five goals and 20 points in his first 10 games, a perfect two points per game. The young centre is currently tied for first in the NHL in points with Elias Pettersson of the Vancouver Canucks and will probably be overtaken by him due to the injury.
The injury to the Devil’s star player occurred during the team’s Friday evening matchup versus the St. Louis Blues. Hughes received a pass from a teammate that sent him flying through the middle of the ice and into the Blues’ zone. He split the defense and came into the zone so quickly that Blues’ defenseman Justin Faulk tripped and stumbled as he tried to defend against the Devils’ attack.
Hughes skated in and took a wrist shot on the Blues’ goaltender but was slashed and fell, causing him to trip and fall into the boards at a high speed. He was able to play one more shift before heading to the tunnel and into the Devils’ locker room. There was concern that this was a very serious injury but fortunately it won’t be so bad and he is expected to be back in the lineup in the next couple of weeks.
Hughes was the first overall pick of the Devils in the 2019 NHL Draft and has been the best player on the team for the last three seasons. In his career, he has scored 92 goals and 227 points in 254 games. He had his best season last year when he scored 43 goals and 99 points, 19 points ahead of the second-highest Devils’ scorer Nico Hischier.
