Edmonton Oilers sign Jayden Grubbe to three-year, entry-level contract

      Published -

Edmonton Oilers, president of hockey operations and general manager Ken Holland announced Wednesday that the club had signed forward Jayden Grubbe to a three-year, entry-level contract.

According to CapFriendly, Grubbe will have an NHL salary of $925,000 and a minor league salary of $80,000.

This comes just hours after the Oilers acquired Grubbe’s rights from the New York Rangers in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick. The Oilers had only one day to sign Grubbe to an NHL contract, or else he would have re-entered the NHL draft.

Grubbe was selected by the Rangers in the third round (No. 65) in the 2021 NHL Draft. The Calgary, Alberta, product has spent the last four seasons with the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League (WHL). He was named captain in 2020-21 and has served as captain since. This past season he registered 67 points (18 goals, 49 assists) in 64 games. He added an additional 16 points (two goals, 14 assists) in 12 games during the WHL postseason as the Rebels were eliminated in a seven-game hard-fought second-round matchup against the Saskatoon Blades.

The Rangers made Grubbe available in a trade back in April, DailyFaceoff insider Frank Seravalli reported.

Throughout a four-year WHL career, he registered 39 goals and 95 assists for 134 points in 194 regular season games, adding four goals and 16 assists for 20 points in 22 career WHL postseason appearances.

Elite Prospects provided this scouting report on the latest Oilers signing, “He’s less aggressive and more quietly intelligent, eliminating off-puck threats, reading switch-offs, and constantly scanning and adjusting,” they said in their 2021 draft guide. “In transition, he builds speed under the puck, pushes plays to the middle, and finishes his off-puck routes to create space behind him.”

Grubbe will report to the Oilers American Hockey League affiliate Bakersfield Condors for the 2023-24 season.
