Are the Florida Panthers the team to beat in the east?

Frank Seravalli talks about why the Florida Panthers are his pick on Valentine's Day.

It’s Valentine’s Day, which means that at Daily Faceoff Live, it’s time for Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk to spread the love to NHL teams that they think deserve it.

One of those teams was the Florida Panthers, who seem to be back to their competitive ways after many thought they’d be out of contention early with the injuries to Aaron Ekblad and Brandon Montour, as well as the early struggles of Matthew Tkachuk.

And yet, they not only survived through those hurdles, they thrived, and they have managed to keep themselves in the running for top team in the Eastern Conference. With a 33-15-4 record, only the Boston Bruins at 74 points and New York Rangers at 71 stand in their way in the regular season, never mind when the playoffs begin and the Panthers will look to reach the Stanley Cup Final.

That and more is why Frank Seravalli had the Panthers as his pick for his Valentine today.

Frank Seravalli: I think the Panthers are the team to beat in the East with all due respect to the Bruins, Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes. I think they have the most dynamic offense, their goaltending has held up just fine, and I think their blue line is probably even better than we gave them credit for. So I don’t see very many holes on this Panthers team.

Florida doesn’t have a ton of assets to go out and spend. I assume they make some kind of move, but I don’t know how aggressive that they’re going to be. And I think this team has as good a chance as any in the East to get out of the East and get back to the Cup Final for the second year in a row, and why not the Cats?
